Minister of Public Service and Administration, Minister Lindiwe Sisulu together with the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister Naledi Pandor briefed the media on Thursday regarding the permanent resident’s backlog project.

The project was introduced in September 2013 and according to Minister Sisulu the project has been a success.

Sisulu said the temporary residents area has stabilised after clearing of 46 000 applications backlogged in 2012 and currently there are 54 641 approved but not yet dispatched residents permits and these are the permits that need to be dispatched soon.

Meanwhile the Department of Home Affairs has adjudicated 10 756 applications out of 23 945 that were a backlog in September.

The Department of Home Affairs has also established a permanent resident’s project to ensure that all applications which are over eight months are adjudicated within 12 weeks.

Additional human resources have been put into the project to clear the backlog by December 2013.

Minister of Home Affairs Naledi Pandor said there has also been a lot of fraud within the department, whereby certain individuals were arrested selling permits.
