Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato has welcomed the arrest of a suspect who allegedly brutally raped and tried to set alight a nine-year-old girl in
The nine-year-old
was found alive, huddled on a pile of rocks in the bush next to the R300
highway.
Plato said in a
statement that it is up to the police to ensure that sufficient evidence which can result in a successful conviction and that
the suspect pays for his crimes by being put behind bars away from our
communities.
Ministerial
Spokesperson Greg Wagner said the minister would like to applaud the members of
the Delft South community who apprehended the man and handed him over to SAPS
for arrest.
Wagner said this
situation could have easily turned into one of vigilante violence. MEC Plato applauded those members of the
community who kept calm in a volatile situation and ensured that justice can
take its course.
