The Western Cape Department of Health said emergency medical services are working closely with the police to provide escorts into areas deemed unsafe.

This is after two paramedics were held at gunpoint in Gugulethu as they were attending to an emergency in the area.

Western Cape Department of Health EMS Spokesperson Robert Daniels said EMS is busy paving a new vehicle system with monitoring.

Daniels said the community itself has a role to play in ensuring that the EMS personnel are safe when going to their areas.

He added that they can arm the EMS or bulletproof the vehicle or constantly expect the police to escort the ambulance.
