The Western Cape Department of
Education said in the last financial year there have been 16 cases of sexual
teacher misconduct on learner that have been reported to the department.

Casey said five educators have been found guilty and the sanction was dismissal
in all five cases.
There were 27 cases of sexual
learner misconduct in 2013.
Casey said we view all cases of
sexual misconduct very seriously, and with regard to educators we report them
to the council of educators and there may be strapped off the teacher role
depending on the nature of the offence.
“And then in terms of the learners
each school is required to have a code of conduct which is determined by the
school governing body after which a wide process of consultation in line with
the SA Schools Act. This legislation
divides offences into minor and serious misconduct, and serious misconduct
could warrant expulsion” Casey added.
