The City of Cape Town says since the introduction of Operation Punch there has been an increase in illegal firearms seized.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said since mid January 17 firearms were seized with 22 arrests of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Smith said this past week alone five illegal firearms were confiscated.  Every firearm that is removed from the community is several less shootings and this is one way from the Metro Police’s side we can reduce the violence, while SAPS builds strong cases against these criminals.

“Operation Punch will continue because it is producing results and trying to make our communities safer” Smith added.
