Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato on Wednesday conducted a walkabout in Tafelsig and Beacon Valley in Mitchell’s Plain, this follows the recent surge in gang violence in the area.

MEC Plato said residents in Mitchell’s Plain described the shootings that have taken place in the past few weeks as a war zone.

Residents are also calling for the immediate deployment of the army.

Plato said the walkabout was to raise awareness but also to say to the people they must continue to have faith in the police.  Residents say the reaction time of police to incidents is very poor.

“So at the end of the day we will convey their request about the deployment of the army to the Provincial Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer and to the National Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa” Plato added.
