Victory for Bo-Kaap residents over demolition of building

The Western Cape government has decided to uphold a decision not to grant a demolition order to Aikman Associates for the destruction of a building in Bo-Kaap.

This follows complaints from residents in Bo-Kaap saying by destroying the building it would damage the streetscape and the built environment of the Bo-Kaap and the rich heritage.

Western Cape MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sports Ivan Meyer said he is serious about protecting the heritage of this province.

Ministerial Spokesperson Daniel Johnson said this decision by the Independent Appeals Tribunal means that local communities can now start to get a sense that where necessary government will step in and will do its best to protect the heritage of our local communities.
