Western Cape MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development Gerrit van Rensburg has challenged Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson on allegations of farm worker abuse.

Minister Pettersson said there are still some farms in the province that are still paying workers with alcohol and that the province is leading in human rights violations in the country.

Ministerial Spokesperson Wouter Kriel said Western Cape Minister of Agriculture Gerrit van Ransburg has reacted to these allegations challenging the national minister to come forward with names and the cases where these alleged abuse has happened.

“Minister van Rensburg said that if the minister knows of any such cases, she is bound to report it to the police and the department of Labour. He also said that if she cannot come forward with real cases then she was misleading the public,” Kriel added.
