The Electoral Commission today published
the list of candidates for the May 7th elections and a total of
8 651 candidates from 45 political parties are contesting in the
elections.
IEC Spokesperson Kate Bapela said the
number of candidates this election is slightly lower compared to 2009 whereby
9 117 candidates appeared on the list. There is an increase of women
contesting within the elections because in 2009 we were sitting at 38.5%.
Bapela said when you look at the provinces
that are leading with women who are contesting within the elections its Western Cape and Northern Cape leading with Western Cape being 43% and Northern Cape being 37%.
“Looking at the age gap we’ve got the
highest age bend with candidates being over 40-years which comprises of 64.68%
Bapela added.
