Minister Sibusiso Ndebele welcomes the Bloemfontein Regional Magistrate Court ruling

The decision by the Bloemfontein Regional Magistrate Court regarding electronic tagging of a South African remand detainee as an alternative to incarceration has been welcomed. 

Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said inmate population has been reduced to 156, 370 in 2013 and the incarceration rate has also declined from 403 inmates to 290 inmates. 

Ministerial Spokesperson Logan Maistry said Correctional Services Minister Sbu Ndebele has enthusiastically welcomed the court ruling to utilise the electronic monitoring awaiting inmates.

Masitry said the electronic monitoring will go a long way in ensuring that incarceration is reduced.
