The Democratic Alliance on Tuesday said the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources must be recalled to end crisis in the mining sector.

DA MP of Mineral Resources James Lorimer said failure to not only end the strike within the platinum belt and create stability within the sector as a whole will decimate both domestic and foreign investor confidence and destroy prospects of future growth in the industry.

Lorimer said the platinum strike of about 70 000 people is nearing its 15th week.

Lorimer said it is having a serious affect, not only the workers on strike but those who are not on strike are affected by possible mine closures which are looming because the industry is really approaching a point where it’s on its knees.

“We think that the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources should reconvene as fast as possible, try and finds ways to end this deadlock Lorimer added.
