Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle has welcomed the new system by the national department of transport to change license plate for security measures.

MEC Carlisle said they want number plates that are visible, readable and that do not open themselves to fraud.

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said the changes would include standardized license plates across the country.

MEC Carlisle said people are increasingly removing their number plates so that they can go through speed traps without being caught.

“This is an important development without going into the details the new number plates will also have certain functions and certain characteristics which will enable us to people who are doing things they shouldn’t be doing much quicker. That will make it almost impossible to remove and replace number plates” Carlisle added.
