The Congress of the South African Trade Unions in the North West says they are disappointed with the decision made by Lonmin in Marikana to dismiss workers.
On Wednesday Lonmin announced that 235
workers have been dismissed. This follows a wage strike that has lasted for
four months.
Cosatu Provincial Secretary Solly Phethoe said
it is a shock and disappointing that Lonmin managers expected workers to come
to work under those circumstances. The situation is beyond the workers’ control.
“We expect from management like any other
mining company before workers come to work that there must be a security assessment,
security plan in terms of ensuring that those workers that come to work are
protected and safe during working hours and after “added Phetoe
