Western Cape Electoral Officer Rev Courtney Sampson today said to date 1.6 million votes have been captured so far out of 2.94 million voters registered in the province.

Sampson said this is the first time in the history of the provincial IEC that result slips have been captured so fast and this is due to several innovations that were introduced by the IEC.

“These innovations include introduction of voting centres which meant that people could vote at sub stations, the proactive approach in conflict management and teams set up to deal with long lines throughout the province” Sampson added.

At this time over 50% of the votes have been captured in the Western Cape with the highest voter turnout recorded in the Overstrand (Greater Hermanus) with 77.70%.
