The Department of Home Affairs today said it remains committed in securing legal protection of refugees as provided for under the international law and recognized in our Bill of Rights.

This as today is World Refugee Day under the theme “Share your Refugee Story”.

Home Affairs Director General Mkuseli Apleni said asylum seekers and refugees are obliged as well as South Africans to respect the laws of the Republic of South Africa, just as in the case of respect of refugees in many countries.

Apleni said our duty as a responsible and a caring country is to ensure that everbody in the country is and feel safe.
“Among the great strides worth sharing as refugee stories from South Africa is our policy of integration such that refugees in this country are entitled by bill of rights to social services

We have improved section 24 and 24 permits hence security features to be issued to newly registered asylum seekers and refugees whose status have been renewed.” Apleni added.
