Western Cape MEC of Community Safety, Dan Plato, has welcomed the South African Police’s new recruitment strategy. National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said changes included community consultation, publishing of names for public scrutiny and a grooming camp.

MEC Plato said increased consultations and co-operation with the community and organisations such as the Community Policing Forums will go far to assist the police in their operational functioning.

Ministerial spokesperson, Ewald Botha added the new strategy is implemented to ensure people of the Western Cape have complete faith in every single serving member of the South African Police Service.

In addition, policing authorities would have to answer to the number of serving members of the police force with criminal records, and the nature of their charges.

Botha took an unequivocal stance that SAPS should lead by example, serve as ambassadors of the uniform and be beyond reproach.
