Reynolds said the first principle of
medical ethics are not to participate in any practices that harm others and
that applies even during times of war, even if you think you on the right side
of the war you are not suppose to do that as a medical professional.
The People’s Health Movement on
Friday condemned the postponement of Dr Wouter Basson’s sentencing and calls
for him to be struck off the medical register.
In December last year the Health
Professions Council of South Africa’s professional conduct committee found Basson
guilty of unprofessional and unethical conduct during his time as head of Project Coast .
Chairperson of the People’s Health
Movement Professor Louis Reynolds said the long delay in accounting for his
apartheid past is a manipulation of rights to fair administrative
procedure.
Reynolds said Dr Basson did all these things and People
Health Movement and a range of other organizations feel that this disqualifies them
from acting as a medical doctor.
“The correct action the health’s
professional council which has found him guilty of unprofessional conduct should
be to remove him from the medical register Reynolds added.
