City of Cape Town concerned about illegal drag racing

City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said one of the contributing factors to road deaths in the province is reckless and negligent driving especially with drag racing.

Smith said drag racers are now exploiting the weaknesses in the criminal justice system which allows them to get away without consequences for their reckless driving and the carnage they cause.

The City is planning to have a legislation that could have illegal drag racers vehicles impounded if they are caught.

Smith said we’ve petitioned to the provincial government to give effective or meaningful legislation and by the end of this year we confident that the new provincial traffic act regulations will be coming out soon.
