The Democratic Alliance said the current state of mathematics study in South Africa is shocking.

DA MP of Basic Education Annette Lovemore said in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo the number of schools not offering mathematics has grown substantially over the last three years.

Lovemore added that the confusion with respect to learner numbers and teacher placement does not bode well for any urgent action, as promised by President Zuma in his State of the Nation Address.

Lovemore said there are 227 schools in South Africa  not offering Mathematics.

“When asked about how many Mathematics teachers are at schools they did not have an answer and my question is how are we going to plan on improving the situation if we do not know these crucial details Lovemore added.
