MEC Grant and Metrorail committed to improving safety on trains

Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Donald Grant together with Metrorail said they will continue to improve safety for commuters and curb the effects that vandalism has on Metrorail assets.

This as MEC Grant and Metrorail Regional Manager Richard Walker initiated the high mast lighting at the Eikenfontein train station.
This is an on-going effort to improve safety at key stations.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said this is an example of how the Western Cape government and Metrorail have been able to work together in the past and will continue to do so in the future in a bid to make stations rail transport safer for commuters.

Dube said the high mast lightning has been deployed in two stations Eikenfontein and Van Der Stel at the value of R1.5 million.  This follows last year’s launch of the scrambler bikes which are also to improve safety at stations.

“Since the launch of the scrambler bikes there have been four on the spot arrests in between stations for crimes ranging from cable theft as well as vandalising of track boxes” Dube added.
