The City of Cape Town says harsher penalties are needed for illegal street racing offenders.

City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the problem is that the criminal justice system is not supporting the city and its efforts concerning this matter effectively.

Over the weekend three people died in illegal street racing incidents in and around the city.

Smith said it is far easy for illegal drag racers to get bail and within days they are on the wrong side of the law again. So we are looking for tougher legislations.

“In this regard we are looking to the provincial government and MEC Donald Grant by the end of this year will be publishing the new provincial traffic regulations, which would assist greatly on this matter” Smith added.
