The Municipality of Mossel Bay has described the recent protest action by residents as senseless. The violent protest which started on Sunday resulted in buildings being torched and cars on the N2 highway being stoned.

Residents are protesting over electricity connection that was cut off by the municipality in the KwaNonqaba Township and also for basic service delivery.

Police also arrested thirteen people for public violence and are appearing in court today.

Resident of Mossel Bay Dominique April said schools in the area were closed down because the protestors started to target schools, clinics, and the Home Affairs office in the Athlar area of Mossel Bay.

“They moved this morning towards the Town Centre where I think they handed over a memorandum to our Mayor and what the outcome of that we are still awaiting news about that and about what the situation is like at Nonqaba.” April added.
