Western Cape MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sport Nomafrench Mbombo has labeled the invasion of Philippi East Initiation School as undermining the integrity of the cultural ritual.

A group of illegal occupiers last week moved in and built shacks on the land where four initiates were going through the right of passage.

MEC Mbombo said the provincial government will discuss this matter with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that an invasion of this kind where initiation schools are interrupted does not happen again.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube said the department will take up this issue with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that an invasion of this kind, where initiation schools are interrupted, does not happen again.
“The Western Cape Government remains committed to ensuring that the cultural practice of initiation is respected and that young men are able to celebrate this important milestone in their lives in a healthy, hazard-free and dignified manner Gwarube added.
