The Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato welcomed the announcement of the expansion of Public Order Policing across the country.
MEC Plato has raised some concerns
regarding that no additional POP resources available to the police force in the
province until 2016.
MEC Plato in a statement said the current
situation cannot continue any longer.
Ministerial Spokesperson Ewald Botha said
the Western Cape is earmarked for
an additional 481 POP staff but none of them will be forthcoming in the first four
years and a mere 70 staff have been made available in year two.
Botha said this is again pulling the straw
when it comes to ensuring stability in the province everyday.
“National Police Commissioner Phiyega needs
to explain to the SAPS in the province and the people of the Western Cape why their safety
is not being taken seriously” Botha added.
