The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works and the Mossel Bay municipality last week conducted a learner transport law enforcement operation.

This is where vehicles were checked for legal and safety compliance.  The department will continue to conduct similar operations to ensure the safety of children who make use of scholar transport.

Departmental Spokesperson Byron La Hoe said the operation mainly targeted driver fitness and roadworthiness for leaner transport vehicles.  It formed part of various activities that are taking place this month as it is Transport Month.

Meanwhile also on the same day an integrated roadblock was conducted on the N2 highway between Mossel Bay and George.

This is where several vehicles including taxis were suspended and several arrests made.

La hoe said three minibus taxis were suspended and 22 cases were issued to the value of R20 300.  A further 99 vehicles were stopped during the operation and one illegal immigrant was arrested.
