WC Traffic Authorities Stomp down on road offenders

Western Cape Traffic Authorities over the past weekend conducted 25 roadblocks across the province of which 2 833 vehicles were stopped and checked. 

1 472 drivers were screened for driving under the influence of alcohol and 38 people were arrested for the offence. 

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said a total of 281 fines were issued during the roadblocks. 

Kenny Africa said the highest reading recorded was 1.19 mg per 1000 ml and that was in the Laingsburg region 4 times over the legal limit of 0.24mg per 1000ml.

Africa said we also tested the speed of 6582 vehicles of which we prosecuted 493 drivers who were exceeding the speed limit.

Africa said the total amount of fines that we issued was R313 700 and the highest speed recorded in the Western Cape Province since Friday was 181km/h in a 120km/h zone between Paarl and Brackenfell.

Meanwhile also during the roadblocks five people were arrested for various crimes.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said one person was arrested in Somerset West for reckless and negligent driving; two people were arrested in Swellendam and Brackenfell for possession of dagga.

Africa said another two people were arrested in Swellendam and Laingsburg for being in possession of false documentation. 

Africa said six fatalities were recorded on the province roads over the weekend.

Africa said one person, a pedestrian died in a motor-vehicle accident on the N1 near Brackenfell.

Africa said in Gugulethu a driver lost control over his vehicle resulting in one person dying in that accident and then also in the Eden Central Karoo Plettenberg Bay one driver died when he lost control over his vehicle and died.

Africa said in Caledon one driver lost control over his vehicle and died in that accident.

Africa said in the Kouebokke veld a passenger died when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

“In Vredenburg and Saldanha a head on collision between two vehicles and in one of the vehicles a women passenger died in that accident Africa added.
