Western Cape Regional Commissioner Delekile Klaas confirmed that one of Anni Dewani’s killers, 27-year-old Xolile Mngeni died at the Goodwood Correctional Centre on Saturday.
Mngeni was diagnosed with a brain tumour
and was sentenced to life in prison for being one of the hitman who murdered
Anni Dewani in Gugulethu in 2010.
In July this year he applied for medical
parole but was denied. Klass said his
family has since been notified of his death.
Klaas said when his parole was declined the
Minister of Correctional Services Michael Masutha suggested that the social
worker confirmed that she would revaluate the case, to look at the family circumstances,
because he needed 24hour support.
“So the minister requested that the social
worker should provide a comprehensive report on the reason he should be placed
on parole. So before his death we were
busy with this process” Klaas added.
