The newly amended National Road Traffic Act regulation which requires children to be appropriately restrained inside a vehicle was gazetted last week.

Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works says the amendments are in line with efforts to increase compliance and also to improve safety on the roads.

In a statement the department stated that a fine for people who offends by not appropriately restraining a child must still be determined.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said most notable of those regulations is one that requires now for children defined as being a 0-3 when transported to vehicles to be appropriately strapped in child car seats.

“This is the move that we have working towards as the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works as well as with safely homes.  Our analysis show that a majority of the incidences or deaths of particularly young children that are found in crashes are due to children not being appropriately restrained,” Dube added.
