Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Donald Grant has urged motorists to be cautious as this weekend is set to be the first payday weekend of 2015.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said they know from previous data, collected last year that pay day weekend are the most dangerous time of the month.

The Province has been experiencing record low numbers of road traffic fatalities, as the festive season draws to a close, since the beginning of the Safely Home campaign in 2009.

Dube said on average 18 people are killed on month end weekend compared to an average of 13 people on normal weekends.

“On ordinary days we know the average of 2.4 deaths per day. We are currently sitting 69 deaths heading into this weekend.” Dube added
