The Congress of South African Trade Union has condemned racial segregation taking place at the Curro private school in Pretoria.

The school last week made headlines after pupils of different races were put into separate classrooms for culture reasons. Cosatu National Spokesperson Patrick Craven said they are totally opposed to any form of racial segregation.

Craven said we have enough problems in our education system anyways because of lack of resources and the two tier system which provides world class education to a small and still mainly white elite as opposed to an under resourced and totally inadequate system for the poor who are overwhelmingly black.

“This has a built in unofficial racism and the last thing we need is to be compounded with the institutionalised racism which we saw at the school in Pretoria” Craven added.

Meanwhile the Higher Education Transformation said it will not fold its arm whilst racist classroom practices multiply contrary to the Constitution of the Republic.

Executive Chairperson of HETN Lucky Thekisho said what happened at Curro should be a lesson to all schools across the country.

Thekisho added that anyone who has been found deliberately engaged in racism or racist activities must be dealt with harshly.

“There must be accountability now, we are tired of this thing, and our accountability in this stance we propose that the MEC of education in Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi must be able to ensure that drastic actions is taken, actually we saying that the principle must lose his job so it must set a precedent to others as well” Thekisho added.
