The Department of Mineral Resources will be conducting an investigation into the fire that occurred at the Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu gold mine.

486 miners were trapped underground when the fire broke out on Sunday.

In a statement Harmony Gold said the fire is believed to have started during a maintenance work on a bulk air cooler on 75 level.

Harmony Gold’s Charmane Russel said they can confirm that 486 employees were evacuated from the Kusasalethu gold mine yesterday evening.

Russel said our thanks go out to rescue teams, employees and everyone who was involved in this operation.

“Fortunately no casualties were reported” Russel added.
