The National Union of Mineworkers has raised its concerns of the safety standards at the Harmony Gold Mine.

This as a fire which broke out on Sunday left about 486 mineworkers trapped underground at the Kusasalethu mine in Carletonville.

All the mineworkers were pulled out and an investigation into the fire is underway.

NUM Health and Safety Secretary Erick Gcilitshana said: “Last year underground fires in Kusasalethu and another one in the beginning of again, this is becoming a trend now which may result into a disaster if it is not contained.”

“If this continues, we are heading for a disaster. Harmony Mine must look at there systems and must put on preventative measures to contain the reoccurrence of these fires before we get to a disaster.” Gcilitshana continued.
