The National Union of Mineworkers will today protesting against the closure of the Optimum Coal Mine in Mpumalanga.

The closure of operations will result in about 1 000 permanent employees and 500 contractors being out of a job.

NUM’s Jabu Khambule said the decision by Glencore management to close the mine is shocking as employees were not even given prior notice.

“We are marching against Glencore’s closure as Glencore leaders should pass on its license to locals in order for the proper people to create jobs rather than retrench them” Khambule added.
