The Social Justice Coalition says it will
appeal a conviction by the Cape Town
Magistrate Court against 21 of its members.
Of the
twenty one; eleven were acquitted of all charges.
SJC’s general secretary Phumeza Mlungwana
said exercising our rights is not a crime and that Apartheid laws must change.
Mlungwana said: “We feel that it is
unconstitutional to criminalize a gathering or a protest of that nature, that’s
why we aim to go further in the high court to challenge the act itself and have
it relooked at how it criminalizes protesters .”
