The Democratic Alliance said it is concerned by the intention by power utility Eskom to secure 5 million tons of unsuitable export quality coal.
DA MP of Public Enterprises
Natasha Mazzone said in a statement that the latest step by Eskom is
bewildering when one considers the bailouts announced by government of R10
billion.
Mazzone said the Democratic
Alliance today has called on the Portfolio Committee for Enterprises to call
before it the minister as well as Eskom Executive to explain why a bid for coal
is being made on coal that has to be made suitable that will result in more
money having to be spent to a company that is financially cash strapped and has
already looked at government bail out to actually keep the lights on in this
country.
“The current state of Eskom
cannot be allowed to continue and the minister and Eskom executive must come
and explain why again Eskom is throwing good money after bad” Mazzone added.
