MEC Plato calling on explanation regarding green card scandal

Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato has called on Provincial Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer to respond to racism claims around the Worcester Green Card Project.

A report last week alleges that gardeners in Worcester have to apply for a green card in order for them to be eligible to apply for work in certain neighbourhoods in the area.

It is alleged that the system was introduced by the Community Policing Forum last June.

Ministerial Spokesperson Ewald Botha said Mr Plato will further request Provincial Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer to put the local SAPS to terms pending the investigation and ensure that no laws of government have been contravened.

Botha said to make it very clear this project is not part a department of Community Safety Sanction initiative.

“SAPS an entity which the Western Cape government has no operational control over needs to answer whether this program was initiated by them and why this system has been endorsed by the local sector commander” Botha added.
