The South African Municipal Workers Union has thrown its support behind the go slow at Telkom by works associated to the Communications Workers Union.
The workers are protesting
against the outsourcing of Telkom’s call centre, supply chain and IT
departments.
Samwu General Secretary Walter
Theledi said they remain opposed to any form of outsourcing as it is
responsible for the dire financial situation that workers find themselves in.
Theledi said undoubtedly, this
move will result in job losses, as those who will be awarded to deliver these
services will seek to ensure that they milk Telkom while workers suffer.
Theledi said Telkom has
further failed to assure unions that it will force their service providers to
incorporate all employees affected and that there will be no job losses.
Theledi said SAMWU will be
embarking on a massive campaign against the privatisation of local government
services.
“We are of the firm view that
municipal services should be rendered by municipalities and not thorough the
tendering systems” Theledi added.
