The Presidency has clarified incorrect reports regarding the appointment of Glen Mashinini.

On Thursday the presidency appointed Mashinini as a member of the Independent Electoral Commission and not as the head, chief or chairperson‎ of the IEC as the media has been reporting.

The position of IEC head is still vacant after the resignation of former Chairperson Pansy Tlakula, following Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's release of a damning report against Tlakula.

Presidential Spokesperson Mac Maharaj says “the majority of the media houses have reported that Glen Mashinini has been appointed as the head, chief or chairperson of the IEC which was not contained in the statement and is incorrect.

Maharaj added that president Jacob Zuma has not appointed a chairperson of the IEC.

Mr Mashinini will join the body as an ordinary commissioner or member at the 1st of May 2015, Maharaj added.
