The South African Communist Party in the Western Cape said it is concerned that the Western Cape Education Department has not renewed transport subsidies for learners from Emil Secondary School in Genadendal, in the Overberg region.

SACP Provincial Secretary Masonwabe Sokoyi said the imposition of this decision without proper and consultation and feedback from the community has shown evidence of poor governance in this province.

Sokoyi said about 105 children are left stranded, because the department has decided to withdraw the subsidy.

"It opts for the resident which is in the form of hostels, which parents have to pay but however the department has not made any proper consultation, so that parents and school kids would be able to understand their current situation which they are finding themselves in.” Sokoyi added.
