A 61-year-old man at the centre of a shooting incident with police in Athlone on the Cape Flats has allegedly killed himself.

This follows after a drama unfolded in Hazendal last night when police and law enforcement agencies moved in to seize dogs that have attacked a member of the public.

Police Spokesperson Thembinkosi Kinana said when officers entered the scene they found the man had already committed suicide.

An inquest docket was opened for investigation. Kinana says after the man refused to let the law enforcement officer in, the SAPS was called for a backup.

Kinana said it appears that the suspect started by firing shot at the police. Unfortunately the police heard gun shots in the house and even before they could enter and on investigation they discovered the suspect had already die.

Police are still at the scene at the moment trying to get all the information, Kinana added.
