The City of Cape Town said the decision by the South African Municipal Workers Union members to down tools are unnecessary as several attempts to iron out their grievances have happened.

About six-thousand affiliates’ downed tools on Monday stating that they will continue the strike indefinitely until their concerns are dealt with.

The city's Xanthea Limberg said we are of the opinion that the strike is unnecessary as a significant amount of these 34 grievances raised has been resolved and those that are still outstanding are in the process of being resolved.
Limberg said we have also agreed to meet with Samwu on a bi-weekly basis to address and resolve the outstanding matters.
