The City of Johannesburg is calling for a swift investigation into the fire that led to the death of two firefighters in the Johannesburg CBD on Saturday evening.

The two firefighters died after they were trapped while battling a blaze at the Nedbank Mall commercial building and they were found unconscious.

City of Johannesburg’s Phindile Chauke said they need full details before they can start announcing to what had happen, for them to get that, they need to conduct an investigation quickly and finish and present a final report to them before they can go publicly with it.

What we had done is that, we had asked the investigators to be prompting, finding out the details as to what happen. We need to know what procedures were not followed, so for us to be able to answer those questions. We have to have a full report on the table that is why the mayoral committee has called on the prompt production of the report.

A memorial service for the firefighters is being held today.
