Lonmin to possibly cut about 3 500 jobs

Loyiso Langeni 08 May 2015

The National Union of Mineworkers has expressed its shock at the decision by Lonmin to cut about 3 500 jobs.

Lonmin has credited this to the decrease in platinum prices and the weakening economy.

NUM Chief Negotiator Erick Gcilitshana said as a union they will fight against any job losses.

Gcilitshana said this is coming as a surprise to us and we believe that as stakeholders we can engage in order to avoid such loss of jobs regardless if its voluntary or forced retrenchments.

"The fact of the matter is that when people are losing jobs they won’t be able to come back to the cycle of the economy. Again we must indicate that as NUM we have not yet been officially approached by Lonmin. They called us on Monday to say there might be discussion on the job loses, unfortunately before that presentation that we are expecting from Lonmin we hear of these bad news” Gcilitshana added
