As from the 1st of
July Metrorail fares will increase countrywide due to increases in electricity
and the inflation rate.
Western Cape Regional manager
Richard Walker said the increase next month is unavoidable.
Walker said without the fare increases to sustain current service levels, the region would have to seriously consider rationalising services.
Metrorail Spokesperson Riana
Scott said in proposing the fare increase to the National Minister of
Transport, we were very careful to bring some cost savers into it and therefore
our weekly and monthly tickets are still highly discounted.
Scott added that what it would mean is that from the 1st of July 2015, the cost of the single tickets would go up by 0.50 cents to R1.00, weeklies between a R1.00 and R2.00 and monthlies between R2.00 and R38.00 depending on travel zone and class.
“We were very conscious to
keep rail the most affordable public transport mode.” Scott concluded.
