During an operation aimed at clamping down on illegal mining, nine suspects were arrested on Tuesday in Benoni.

Police conducted the operation at shaft 13 at a disused mine and found over 30 people who opened fire on the police.

The nine suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

Colonel Katlego Mogale said we realised that during the operation about 30 foreign nationals who were illegal miners, opened fire on police and the police returned fire.

Mogale added that during the shoot out no one was injured but nine suspects aged between 19 and 45 were arrested.

“Police also confiscated items, such as gas bottles, spades, hammers, and bags of gold dust.” Mogale concluded.
