DA calls for investigation on the appointment of Deputy Minister’s daughter to the IPID

The Democratic Alliance has called for the suspension of Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu.

This is after an article on a local newspaper revealed that Sotyu’s daughter has received a top job at the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, but there were more qualified candidates then her.

DA MP of Police Dianne Kohler Barnard said appointment processes of senior personnel must be transparent and the candidates must be appropriately selected on the basis of merit and not their political connection.

Barnard said “I’m writing to the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate the matter”.

It’s alleged that the Deputy Minister was improperly involved in the appointment of her daughter Boniwe Sotyu to IPID. Out of the 90 candidates who applied for the job, several of them were far experienced and qualified than the Deputy Minister’s daughter.

“The interview panel asserted that she was the best candidate for the job, and acting IPID head confirmed Sotyu’s appointment saying he was happy that she was suitably qualified”

This appointment smacks of nepotism, favoritism for the daughter of the IPID’s own Deputy Minister.

This case cannot be ignored given that this is the 2nd case of suspected nepotism at the police department, Barnard added.
