The Communication Workers Union has reached an agreement with MTN effectively bringing an end to a month long strike over salary increases and bonuses.

Amongst the agreement is the recognition agreement will be concluded within 30 days after the signing of the settlement agreement.

CWU General Secretary Aubrey Tshabalala said indeed we have reached an agreement on a number of areas, and there is only one area where we have not agreed to then question of increasing salaries and, on bonuses MTN has agreed to move to 4% in addition to 4% which will make it 8% this year.

“We further said they must remove the policy that says bonuses will be payed based on performance and therefore it will be 12% to every worker across the board”

We further made an agreement on casual workers that casual workers will be on permanent basis, we just have to define the process, Tshabalala added.

Meanwhile the union has condemned the undermining of court order obtained last week against Telkom on retrenchment issues.

CWU General Secretary Aubrey Tshabalala said Telkom is hell bent on ensuring that 4 400 jobs are lost in the company.

Tshabalala said we have established a number of corruption activities of fraudulent acts within Telkom that have cost the company millions of rands.

Instead of cutting costs, they should effectively deal with corruption.

“We therefore because of lack of leadership we call for the removal of the CEO”

We are going to mobilise our forces through and through so that we can be able to achieve that objective.
