The City of Cape Town has confirmed that it has
arrested four officials working in the vehicle licensing section within the
Financing Directorate of the city, for bribery and corruption.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP
Smith said the four gave taxi bosses vehicle registration discs fraudulently.
Smith said these were vehicle owners who were
barred from having or renewing their vehicle registration.
Smith said this is when they have outstanding
warrants of arrest.
“The officials allegedly assisted them and found a
weakness in the system that allowed them to circumvent the system and issue
these taxi owners licenses. Three of them were arrested at work, the fourth one
later the night.” Smith said.
Smith added that they form part of the seven
officials, the other three resigned previously, after they were interviewed in
the last month on the matter.
Investigations started in May and it is alleged
they took a R1300 bribe for each fraudulent license, Smith concluded.
