The Western Cape Department of Local Government has welcomed the urgent intervention by the provincial treasury for the Oudtshoorn municipality.

The municipality has been plagued by allegations of serious financial mismanagement and service delivery challenges.

The council has failed to pass a budget for the new financial year.

Ministerial Spokesperson James-Brent Styan said MEC of Local Government Anton Bredell said the intervention was brought about by the council’s recent failure to pass a budget for the new financial year 2015/16.

Brent Styan said until a budget is approved by the municipality the provincial MEC for Finance Dr Ivan Meyer will be managing the municipality’s finances.
