The National Union of
Mineworkers has condemned Kumba Iron Ore’s decision to retrench employees at
both Sishen and Kolomela operations.
In a statement NUM said it
will continue to fight to defend jobs and mitigate the impact of retrenchment.
Meanwhile Lonmin announced on Friday it will be closing two of its shafts,
affecting about 6,000 workers including contractors.
NUM Chief Negotiator at Kumba
Iron Ore Lucas Phiri said the decision of yesterday, Kumba was advised to go
and retract all the letters and notice they gave to our individual members.
“We take that as a positive
sign going forward and we will continue fighting for the better benefit of our
members and for none dismissals” Phiri added.
